Howard County high school seniors were surprised this year when some awards and scholarships traditionally presented at graduation ceremonies were pulled due to a directive from the U.S. Department of Education. The order said schools couldn’t present race-based awards without risking federal funds. Community groups, including Jack and Jill and the Council of Elders, were uninvited from ceremonies and forced to host their own events to honor Black students. The changes sparked concern among students and community leaders who felt the awards represented more than recognition—they were a symbol of community support and achievement. These groups plan to adapt and persist.
