FEMA Puts Retention Pond Loans on Pause — Ellicott City’s Future at Stake

Ellicott City’s flood mitigation plans are hitting another snag. The feds just paused two major retention pond projects, part of the town’s multi-year Safe and Sound Plan to prevent future flooding like the deadly 2016 and 2018 events. Residents are frustrated but resilient. Howard County’s officials remain committed to the plan, as low-interest loan approvals hang in limbo. Locals know the stakes—water may rise, but so does Ellicott City’s spirit.

Howard County is facing a new health threat as cases of babesiosis, a tick-borne illness, rise across Maryland. Deer ticks carrying the parasite that causes the disease are expanding their territory due to warming, putting local residents at risk.
