Good morning, Columbia. Ecuador fans put an Ecuador shirt on Philadelphia’s famous Rocky statue before their match Ivory Coast last night.

I guess the Rocky Curse (Philadelphia Eagles opponents who have tried this typically get stomped afterwards) applies to American football and The Beautiful Game.

In today’s Columbia Scoop:

  • Parkinson's boxing is back

  • two free Juneteenths

  • An Ellicott City road closure

Let’s get to it.

Ethics complaint hits county exec candidate 8 days before primary ⚖️

Photo: Howard County government

Howard County's race for executive just got messier.

A developer has filed an ethics complaint against County Council member Deb Jung, one of the Democrats running for the county's top job. Brian Kim — managing member of the company building The Source community center in Columbia — alleges Jung misused her county office for political gain, leaning on council processes, nonpublic information, and even the county seal to add weight to her campaign attacks on the $25 million project.

Jung isn't backing down. She called the complaint a "political stunt" by developers who've donated to her opponent, Vanessa Atterbeary, and says she's running to end the "pay-to-play politics that have dominated Howard County for too long."

  • The backstory: Jung once supported The Source, but turned critical after January finance reports showed Atterbeary had taken donations from people connected to the project.

The Howard County Ethics Commission will decide what to make of the complaint. Voters get their own say in the June 23 primary.

JUNE JUBILEE

Two big Juneteenth celebrations land in Howard County this week 🎉

Photo: Howard County Office of Human Rights & Equity

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved Americans in Texas learned they were free — and Howard County is honoring it with two free celebrations.

  • Friday, June 19: Juneteenth at the Lakefront takes over the Downtown Columbia Lakefront from 2 to 9 PM, with live music, Black-owned food trucks and makers, kids' activities, and a headline set from D.C. soul singer Kyaira.

  • Saturday, June 20: The county's Juneteenth Community Day & Block Party runs 10 AM to 3 PM at the Harriet Tubman Cultural Center, with food, line-dancing classes, a community yard sale, woodworking with Van Buren Woodworks, and hands-on history.

Both are $0 and all ages.

P.S. County government offices are closed Friday. So are 50+ centers, the animal shelter, courts, and historic sites. Trash, recycling, and the landfill aren’t affected. Community centers, parks, and the Meadowbrook Athletic Complex are all open.

The non-contact classes help with tremors, balance, and coordination. ($)
