Good morning, Columbia. Don’t forget to ruin the circadian rhythm you worked so hard for set your clocks an hour ahead for daylight saving time on Sunday. Not that we have many clocks that don’t change themselves now. . .
In today’s Columbia Scoop:
Youth inline hockey
HoCo’s flag and why it’s at half-staff
High school theater
Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST
Why are the flags at half-staff?
Ever see a flag and wonder why it’s at half-staff? Me, too. That’s why Scoop likes to share when we know. This week, County Executive Calvin Ball ordered that all Howard County flags fly at half-staff from sunrise on March 3 to sundown on Saturday, March 7 in honor of Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr.
Jesse Jackson was a civil rights activist from South Carolina who passed away at the age of 84 on February 17.
Btw, Howard County has a relatively new flag that bucks the common tradition of simply placing the county seal over a plain color. Our flag is meant to reflect the county’s diverse natural resources and population. It was first flown in July 2025.

🥅 Want your kids to play inline hockey?
After a huge response to last month’s announcement about an adult inline hockey league, Rec & Parks is exploring adding a similar option for kids. Sound like something your kids might be into? Let Rec & Parks know with this form!
Dog of the Week: Meet Carter

Some dogs know they’re big. Carter is not one of those dogs.
This 75-pound, 2-year-old hound is essentially a puppy trapped in a linebacker’s body. He’ll greet your entire extended family at holidays, shower them with affection, then accidentally steamroll your seven-year-old nephew en when Grandpa Tom calls his name and waves a piece of Turkey in the air. He’s not mean. He just doesn’t know how big he is.
He’s also convinced that pawing you is a perfectly reasonable way to get your attention. And since he’s big (I can’t remember if we mentioned that already), it kind of hurts sometimes. He’s working on it. The good news is he’s potty trained and crate trained. He’s also great with other dogs. As long as they like to play rough.
Carter is at Tara’s House Animal Rescue in Sykesville. Apply to meet him.
