Columbia Association (CA) is the nonprofit that helps keep Columbia looking sharp and feeling like home. Founded in 1967 by developer James Rouse alongside the creation of Columbia itself, CA operates as a community services organization rather than a traditional homeowners’ association. Its mission? To enhance the quality of life for Columbia residents through open space maintenance, recreational facilities, and community programs.
CA manages parks, lakes, walking paths, pools, gyms, and neighborhood centers across Columbia’s ten villages—think of it as the behind-the-scenes crew keeping everything running smoothly. The organization also hosts cultural events, sustainability initiatives, and fitness programs for all ages.
While Columbia has evolved over the decades, CA’s core role hasn’t changed: balancing community amenities with environmental stewardship and inclusivity. It’s been a key player in shaping Columbia as a nationally recognized model for planned communities focused on equity, green space, and vibrant community life.
