Pour yourself a glass — one of Maryland’s freshest wine brands is making serious moves. Boyd Cru Wines, the Black-owned, Montgomery County-based label founded by husband-and-wife duo Jon’ll and Matthew Boyd, is opening its first-ever tasting room and storefront this spring at Savage Mill in Howard County. And this isn’t just about sipping wine — it’s about building a whole vibe.
Set to debut in May, the 2,000-square-foot space will be part tasting room, part retail incubator. That’s right — alongside the clink of wine glasses, you’ll find a rotating lineup of 12 small local businesses showcasing everything from handmade soaps to organic scrubs. Think of it as a mini market for makers, all under one roof — and powered by community.
Boyd Cru launched in 2023, born from the couple’s love of wine and desire to create a brand that speaks to both casual drinkers and seasoned enthusiasts. Using grapes from Maryland’s Eastern Shore and producing in Poolesville, the Boyds have already landed shelf space in several Maryland and D.C. retailers — including a handful of Target stores, thanks to their partnership with Diverse Powered Brands.
Their new tasting room, funded in part by a $125,000 crowdfunding campaign, is the next chapter in their story — one that’s just as much about creating access as it is about good wine. The Boyds know firsthand how intimidating “big box” retail can be for small businesses, so they’re turning their storefront into a platform for others to grow.
The choice of Savage Mill wasn’t random either. After a successful pop-up there last year, the couple was drawn to the historic, family-run shopping hub filled with creative, local energy. And with plans for a full-scale vineyard in the future, this move feels like the perfect next step.
Bottom line? Boyd Cru is more than a wine brand. It’s a movement blending culture, craftsmanship, and community into every bottle. And in Howard County, they’re just getting started.
